Rally for the Greyhounds
[ Hallandale Beach, Florida]

Please join GREY2K USA volunteer Kathy Pelton for a rally at Mardi Gras Racetrack (formerly Hollywood Greyhound Park) in Hallendale Beach. This is the first in a series of 2010 events to draw attention to the cruelty and killing of greyhound racing in Florida.

BRING:
Your canine companion! Some signs will be available but we encourage participants to bring their own as well. Buttons and flyers will be provided to all who attend.

WHY:
At Mardi Gras Racetrack, hundreds of greyhounds live in tiny cages too small for them to freely stand up or turn around. While racing, many are seriously injured, suffering broken bones, cardiac arrest, seizures, paralysis, head trauma and more. This cruelty must end!

RSVP:
Please call Kathy Pelton at 954-432-8560 or e-mail her at kenkath2@bellsouth.net

As long as dog racing continues, thousands of dogs will suffer. Together, we can make dog racing history in the state of Florida too!

Pit Bull Banter

Pit Bulls have been the subject of intense media scrutiny, inciting both the breed's enthusiasts and its adversaries to verbally duke it out in the public arena. However, there remains plenty more to learn and discuss about Pit Bulls if the goal is to advocate effectively on their behalf, ultimately improving the way they are both perceived and treated.

Join the Behavior & Learning Department and members of WHS for a group discussion over coffee and hot chocolate, during which we'll talk about the myths, facts, and other popular issues surrounding Pit Bulls.

The session will include discussion on:

  • Breed-specific characteristics
  • Aggression, arousal, and why dogs fight
  • Biases against the breed .
  • How you can help
  • and so much more!

PAWS Chicago Fur Ball

Chicago’s premier pet-friendly black tie gala will draw more than 750 guests at Chicago's famous Drake Hotel, many escorted by their canine companions. Lucky dogs in attendance will be treated to a doggie buffet, animal communicator and dog spa, complete with an animal masseuse. Human companions will enjoy silent and live auctions with one-of-a-kind items, raffle, dancing and dinner buffet.

About PAWS Chicago:
PAWS Chicago (Pets Are Worth Saving) is the city’s largest No Kill humane organization. Through a solution-based approach to animal welfare, PAWS Chicago has placed Chicago on track to become a No Kill city where pets are no longer destroyed because they are homeless. Since PAWS Chicago’s founding in 1997, the number of homeless pets killed per year has dropped from more than 42,000 to less than 19,000 – more than a 50 percent decrease.

In the fall of 2007, PAWS Chicago celebrated a milestone by opening the Midwest’s first No Kill, cageless, state-of-the-art adoption center for dogs and cats in Lincoln Park. PAWS Chicago is on track to find homes for more than 3,600 homeless pets this year. With higher adoption numbers, the cost of medical treatments and caring for homeless pets continues to increase.

Every dollar raised from the 8th Annual Fur Ball enables PAWS Chicago to continue life-saving work.

Humane Society Walk for the Animals

K9 PAC had a wonderful time at the walk, where the cloudy day provided the perfect weather to keep all of the pups cool. Wonderful dogs of all sizes and breeds brought their parents out to enjoy live music, treats, agility courses, and of course, the walk itself. We also visited with the Washington Humane Society staff and the dogs they brought, who sported their bright orange 'Adopt Me' vests and mingled with potential forever families.

Keep this event on your calendar for next year - it was the most doggie fun that we have had in the nation's capital. Here are some pictures from the event:

Chi-Chi Jack Russell 9 years old

Chi-Chi is currently in a foster home and is looking for her forever family. She is a 9-year-old Jack Russell Terrier. Chi-Chi is 18 lbs. and has a ton of energy, which she takes out on her favorite squeaky toys. She will need plenty of exercise and has a high prey drive, so she will do best in a home without small animals. Although she likes other dogs, she will probably need a little more socialization before being placed in a home with another canine companion.

JJ Dog 7 months, shepherd mix

Great news - JJ was adopted! :)

JJ is a 6 month old male puppy. He is very sweet, and loved the attention from all of the people at the event. He gets along great with other dogs, and was even submissive to Chi-Chi, the Jack Russell Terrier who is about a third if JJ's size. He loves bones and will lay down in the middle of a crowd completely content if he has a bone to chew on. He is food-motivated and easy to train, very happy to share, and not food agressive at all. The shelter evaluator says that he would benefit from a strong leader who will provide him with leadership, boundaries, and a whole lot of love! Fully grown, JJ will probably get to approximately 55 lbs.

Peter the 7 month old Affenpinscher mix

Great news - Peter was adopted! :)

Peter is a 7 month old Affenpinscher mix and was placed in the shelter cause because he had fleas and his owner didn't have the money to pay to get rid of them. But he is totally flea-free now and ready to find a new forever family! Peter loves squeaky toys and treats. He is still kind of undersocialized with other pups, but he did great with the ones at the event. Peter is just about full grown at 30lbs.

Zeus Shih-tzu maltese mix

Great news - Zeus was adopted! :)

Zeus is a 2-year-old Shih Tzu/Poodle mix. He is an energetic, spunky little guy with a huge heart! Zeus adores belly rubs and is calm when being pet and snuggled with. He loves to chase after squirrels and to explore! Zeus gets along well with humans but not all other dogs, so he'd do best as an only pup with a loving family who has plenty of time to show him tons of love and affection. Zeus is fully grown at 16lbs.

Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary Open House

(www.animalsanctuary.org) Representatives from K9 PAC were proud to participate in the Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary 2009 open house. Thank you very much to all who attended and participated in the silent auction and animal sponsorship program. We hope you enjoyed your time visiting the farm animals, listening to the live music, and enjoying the wonderful vegan buffet.

Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary provides a lifetime home for farm animals that are found or rescued from inhumane conditions. They have an informative website (see link above) that features some of their animals and the stories about how they got to PSAS. Animal sanctuaries for farm animals are rare, and it was a unique experience for us to interact with the various animals. The 600+ lb pigs seemed particularly happy and we have to admit, they became our absolute favorites.

We encourage you to peruse their website for more information about the organization and other events throughout the year. You may also sponsor an animal online or by phone, which enables you to visit the animal you sponsor! K9 PAC sponsored Izzy the piglet, we cannot wait to see him grow into a big pig. Also, remember to mark your calendar to attend this event next year!
